The next (digital) chapter in
music journalism

Wax Poetics by

View caseAgency

Wax Poetics has been a household name amongst world-music enthusiasts since its launch in 2001 - born in Brooklyn, NY. Originally a bi-annual publication - well known for its world-class music journalism. Sharing musical stories that dig deeper. Now in 2021 Wax Poetics is entering a new era. They approached Dutch experience design studio Wonderland - based in Amsterdam - to refresh their identity, and create a unique online platform. An online music journalism community for reading, listening, watching, discovering and discussing music: Wax Poetics Volume 2.

More than 250 pages of unique content. With a real editorial look and feel. You can dig through old records, listen to mixes, read about your favourite artists, have your own personalised membership. Explore music old and new. From Prince to broken beats. From the special Marvin Gaye edition to ordering your own printed version of their dance floor edition.

With Wax Poetics’ refreshed identity, the Dutch studio pays homage to unique details that real music fans will recognise: a neutral palette inspired by the colours of worn records - twinning them with a secondary suite influenced by a wide range of record genres.

Also, to get that analogue feel, Wonderland used real grit and paper textures from scanned old records and sleeves. Accompanied by some hand-drawn notations, referring to those infamous editor's mark-ups and record scratches. Using a super punchy grotesque headline font throughout - perfectly reflecting Wax Poetics’ bold character, but also its timelessness.

Love the editorial design look! And all the crafty touches: textures as backdrop, surprising hovers, handwritten effects. Totally immerses you into this world.
